Race matters profoundly for health because Black and White people are not treated equally. As Williams shares with us that, "Every seven minutes, a black person dies prematurely in the United States. That is, over 200 Black people die every single day who would not die if the health of blacks and whites were equal" (Williams). This statistic is extremely alarming! As William states in this TED Talk, discrimination is related to higher risks of diseases. He even goes on to talk about how a study of young Black adults who dealt with higher levels of discrimination had higher weight, higher stress hormones, and blood pressure (Williams). Williams also points out the fact, something that we have talked about previously in class, that one profound way racism impacts health is the discrimination in medical care (Williams). There is a significant decrease in the quality of care that people of color receive when compared to white people. I found it very interesting learning about implicate bias (Williams). I've heard about this before, but there was never a title addressed to it. Williams makes a great point on how where we live will be a determinant in a lot of factors in our lives, including health, and he points out that America's best-kept secret is residential segregation (Williams). I thought it was fascinating that Williams points out the fact that if you get rid of residential segregation, you would completely get rid of all of the unequal opportunities that reside today (Williams). Williams also makes a great point that I hadn't really considered before, but that the majority of people in our society are conditioned to fear and discriminate against Black people because that is what our society has taught them. David R. Williams's Measuring Discrimination was so interesting! Before even taking the assessments, I was aware of the fact that I haven't experienced discrimination the way a lot of people in our society have. Most of my discrimination has come from the fact that I am a woman. I've never had anyone fear me, or watch me closely in a store, or had horrible service at a restaurant because I am white, and I recognize the privilege this has given me in this sad society, especially from not having to experience discrimination. Reading a lot of these questions really puts in into perspective how awful discrimination is and frightening because you never truly know how anyone will act in any given situation when they are racist and angry for no reason. The discrimination is never ending, and the lists were very extensive in specific situations. I couldn't imagine what it would be like not feeling safe going anywhere because someone can discriminate against you, and violence can ensue. The names of Black people being murdered by cops just keep growing longer, and there are still a lot of people out there who don't even consider racism to be a problem in our society. The toll this blindness has on humanity is profound, and as William stated, we can all become ripples if we wanted.
