Victim's shirt covered with blood, puncture marks, trial told
The Ottawa Citizen, 7 October, 2015
Melissa Richmond's T-shirt was riddled with puncture marks and a lone plastic Remembrance Day poppy lay on the ground where she was found in a ravine near the South Keys Shopping Centre after her husband stabbed her to death, court heard Wednesday.
Howard Richmond, 52, has admitted to killing his 28-year-old wife, but defence lawyers Joseph Addelman and Jason Gilbert have urged the jury to find him not criminally responsible. They argue that the soldier, who did three tours in Afghanistan, was in the throes of chronic posttraumatic stress disorder.
Det. Chantal Pombert, an Ottawa police forensic identification officer, testified Wednesday that she responded to the spot where Melissa's body was found on July 28, 2013, near the shopping centre, about a 30-minute drive from the couple's Winchester home. It was three days after Richmond had reported his wife missing.
When Pombert went into the scene with a forensic pathologist, she saw Melissa lying on her ride side with her left arm extended. The woman had suffered visible trauma to her left arm and rib, Pombert noted.
Melissa's red T-shirt with a photo of macaroni and cheese and the words "soul mate" on the front was bloodied and had puncture marks, Pombert testified.
The jury heard Wednesday that Melissa's running shoes were stained with blood and grass. Her jeans were stained with grass and dirt, consistent with someone who was lying or sitting in dirt, Pombert testified.
When the body had been removed, blood and broken branches were discovered underneath.
After Pombert completed her examination, member's of the Ottawa police emergency services unit did a grid search of the area.
Two days after the body was found, Pombert had the victim's vehicle towed from an OPP station to the Ottawa police forensic identification bay and got a warrant to search it.
The jury was shown photos of Melissa's white purse, a black and blue duffel bag and a stuffed animal that was in the back seat.
The jury also saw pictures of Richmond's bloody clothes and gloves, and of a screwdriver and folding knife that police found hidden behind ductwork in the basement of his home.
Pombert testified that Richmond's jeans had blood, dirt, grass stains on them and a green leaf was stuck to the pants.
