Part I: Measuring Volumes

Measure the volume of a compartment of the ice tray by assuming it has a rectangular shape and using the equation: V = Length x Width x Height.

Fill the ice tray to the top with water and let it freeze overnight.

Measure the volume of the part of the ice cube.

Since the mass of the water does not change when it freezes, the ratio

icewater=(MiceVice)(MwaterVwater)=VwaterVice

Use water = 1000 kg/m3 to determine the mass density of ice, and compare it to the accepted value water = 900 kg/m3. As always, you should use the Relative Difference when comparing values (see earlier lab for the definition of the Relative Difference).

Part II: Determining the Mass Density of Ice

Since the mass of the water does not change when it freezes, the mass of the ice is the same as the mass of the water that you froze. Therefore, Mice = Mwater and the ratio

Rearranging gives the following equation:
