Optus said current and former customers' data were stolen - including names, birthdates, home addresses, phone and email contacts, and passport and driving licence numbers. The hacker later published 10,000 customer records on an online forum and threatened to sell the remaining data unless Optus paid A$1.5 million in cryptocurrency within a week. In light of this catastrophic event the federal government is considering immediate reform in this area.
