In my opinion, one benefit of a union is the ability to collectively bargain for better wages and working conditions that otherwise may not be available. An employer must follow legislation as a minimum, and because of unions, there are better contracts that must be followed. The ability to begin a position with certain benefits and a higher wage due to a previous wage agreement creates competition for job seekers, which can benefit the company. This employee competition allows companies to 'skim from the top' and hire educated, highly productive individuals that will in turn increase the company's productivity. One downside of being part of a union are the wage deductions from union dues and assessments. While these are important for the function of a union, the deduction could become too large without enough benefits from the union in return. This could create resentment within the union, and morale across businesses could fall. A workforce of people unhappy because of a decreased wage without much in return won't be productive, causing company's productivity to fall as well. A second downside could be unwanted/unneeded benefits and therefore wage deductions.
