You work for an agency of the united Nations that, among other things, makes plans for the world-wide distribution of food in the event of a food shortage. Recently the world’s population has been increasing at a rate of 1.09% a year. Your agency estimates that over the next 10 years the world-wide food supply will increase at a rate of 1.1% a year. Since this is greater than the projected increase in population, some argue that planning for future food shortages due to over population over the next 10 years is unnecessary.
The table below shows estimated populations in 2018 and current estimated growth rates for different groupings of countries and for the world as whole. The last column gives agency’s estimate of the food supply in each region and the world in 2020, based on a 1.1% annual growth rate.
Write a report to your boss on whether or not the agency should plan for possible food shortages due to over population in the next 10 years, include data and computations to support your conclusions. Mention any assumptions you are making. Carry out answers in computations to two decimal places using conventional rounding.
