sport of fencing has a large weapon which is the epee. It consists of a long thin blade which is separated from the grip by a guard. At the opposite end of the grip to the guard is a round knob called the pommel. A particular epee has a total mass of 1.5 kg and its length is 220 cm. The distance between the pommel and the guard is 24 cm. The centre of the mass of the epee is 48 cm from the pommel. A person is holding the epee by the grip so that the epee is horizontal. Their hand is 20 cm wide and the nearest side of the the hand to the pommel is located 4 cm from the pommel. (a) Draw a diagram of this situation. (b) Draw the force diagram for this situation. (c) Apply one of the conditions for static equilibrium to find the total force exerted by your hand on the epee. (d) Apply the other condition for static equilibrium to find the torque exerted by your hand on the epee. (e) The force exerted by the person's hand can be modelled two oppositely directed vertical forces acting on either side of the hand. What are the directions of each force? Justify your answer. Redraw your force diagram from part (b) to show these two forces. (f) What are the magnitudes of these two forces?
