1.Explain the situation Explain what happened, when and where it happened, who was involved, why you think it happened.
2.Explain why the situation was troubling to you. Which of your values were causing you distress? Was a hypernorm involved? For example, is fairness an important value for you and the situation about which you are writing seemed unfair? Is honesty a strong value for you and the situation involved lying or withholding information?
Step 2 - Conduct a Stakeholder Analysis of the Situation |
1.Identify all stakeholders involved in the situation. 2.Explain what is [or was] at stake for each stakeholder [i.e., what does/did each have to gain or lose?]. In other words, if you speak up/take action, how could it impact each stakeholder?If you are writing about a past situation, focus on what couldhavehappened to each stakeholder [rather than what actually happened]. 3.Based on your analysis above, which stakeholder(s) have the most to gain and which have the most to lose if you speak up/take action?
Step 3 - Make a Plan for Speaking Up/Taking Action |
1.With whom [and in what format] will you communicate? Note - if you are writing about a past experience, you must explain about how you would communicate if the situation were to happen today [not how you did it at the time]. I used the word "communicate" rather than speak because you might decide to use a form of communication other than face to face. For example, you might decide to use email. Also, you might decide to communicate with an individual or a group of people. If you communicate with a group of people, you could do it in a meeting or one on one. Where and when would you do this? If you communicate with an individual, when and where would you do it? 2. What is the primary message you are trying to convey? How will you frame the situation? Be sure to tie your message to your values. For example, if you believe the situation is unfair, explain why you believe it is unfair. 3.What outcome are you trying to achieve? What is theideal outcome for you in this situation? Are there any outcomes that are acceptable but not ideal? If so, describe them. 4.What approach will you use in your communications? For example, will you usequestioning, debating, adversarial, or something else? You don't have to pick one, you can use a combination of them. 5.What can you do to prepare with regards to finding allies, obtaining data/information? Will you seek advice from anyone about how to handle this? Are there people you think will support you? Is there any information you can gather that will help you "make your case?" 6.What reasons & rationalizations are you likely to encounter from the person/people to whom you plan to voice your values?
7.Describe the reasons & rationalizations you are likely to hear.Be sure to use GVV terms rather than generalities. For example, use the term "expected/standard practice" rather than just "everyone does it."
Step 4 - Develop a Script |
Explain a script of what you would say and what the person/people to whom you are communicating might say.Include two different endings: one if it doesn't go well (i.e. if they are not being open-minded) and one if it does go well (i.e. if they are receptive).
