The level in a surge tank with a volume (V) of 20m3 a cross-sectional area (A) of 10m2 and a normal flow (Fin) of 2m3/min
The level in a surge tank with a volume (V) of 20m3 a cross-sectional area (A) of 10m2 and a normal flow (Fin) of 2m3/min is to be controlled with a PI controller. The steady state level (Lss) is 1m. The expected maximum step change in the uncontrolled flow ( Fmax ) is 0.2m/min (10\% of normal). The maximum allowable change in the level (Lmax) is 0.1m(10% of range). Note that the pump provides a fixed discharge pressure and thus makes the flow through the valve independent of the liquid level in the tank. If P1 Control Gc=Kc{1+is1} is used, answer the following questions: a) Define the Controlled (CV), Manipulated (MV) and Disturbance (DV) variables for this process. Describe the control objectives for the process: b) Use IMC to calculate PI controller settings. The process model is given through the following transfer function in deviation variables: Fout(s)L(s)=As1 Use your judgement in choosing the closed loop time constant C c) Use Linear Averaging Method to calculate the PI settings. d) Compare the two sets of tuning parameters and recommend one. Justify your choice. e) What form PID control would you recommend - (1) PID on Error (2) P1 on Error, D on PV or (3) I on error, PD on PV? f) Bonus question: Which tuning approach will lead to smoother changes in the flow out (Fout)
