This assignment includes a case study scenario including Freudian defense mechanisms and character types. You will be asked questions about identifying and justifying various elements of Freud's theoretical approaches to personality presented by the character. Your explanation should include such concepts as the type of anxiety and agencies. You may use thisthree-step process for explaining real-life examples.
Please read the following description below to complete the assignment:
Harvey is out at the bar with a group for the night celebrating his best friend's birthday. He normally does not get the chance to go out much because he has a very busy work schedule, but he is able to make small adjustments on rare occasions for special moments. Harvey purposely keeps himself packed with a full schedule and is very organized so that he won't fall behind on any of his responsibilities. However, this has created some social distance between himself and acquaintances over the course of his life because he never gets enough free time to form strong relationships with others. In fact, a lot of people in Harvey's office have invited him for gatherings and he declined their invitations because he was "too overloaded" with work. Most people who have known him throughout his life have always just assumed he is pretty disinterested in making friends and is a little cold. People in his office have started to avoid interacting with him on group projects as he often gets rather controlling and hard to handle without becoming frustrated. The only close friend Harvey has ever been able to retain is the one he is out celebrating this night.
While out with this group, Harvey finds that he needs to drink a lot in order to want to be social. Every little thing that he notices as out of place or messy on the table they are seated at bothers him more and more if he is not drinking to distract himself. Historically, Harvey has always been a bit of a heavier drinker. Despite loving control over his life and surroundings, he often drinks while he is home alone after stressful days at work. Sometimes it gets to the point where he will wake up to messes the next morning that he didn't remember making the night before. These mornings always start him off feeling low because he is ashamed of his heavy drinking. A guilty pleasure of his recently has also become vaping nicotine. It started out as an alternative coping mechanism for his stress to hit his vape whenever he was feeling tense, but now he has become quite addicted and takes frequent breaks at work to go vape in private. Even his boss has noticed his lack of availability at random times during the day while he is outside vaping.
On this night in particular, Harvey was rather shaken up after almost being discovered. During his work day, Harvey was called into his boss's office where he was asked about where this sudden distracted state of his had come from. His boss is not aware that he has become a heavy vaper as Harvey is a bit embarrassed and always makes sure to do it in a secluded place outside where no one will see. Harvey's boss reminds him that company policy only allows any personal/smoke breaks six times a day if that was why he has been missing from his desk so much recently. When approached this way and the specific words "smoke break" came out of his boss's mouth, Harvey nearly jumped out of his chair and grunted in disgust. Harvey exclaimed with a very forced expression of disgust on his face, "EW! I could never be caught dead smoking or vaping! It's so bad for your health. I can't believe you think I would do that. I prefer to take care of my body and treat it with respect." He then explained that his sporadic absences have been due to the large amounts of water he's been drinking to staying youthful and healthy making him have to use the restroom often.
To help himself drown out the rough day he had, Harvey kept buying rounds of shots for everyone and taking doubles himself as the other people in the group seemed to interact with him more when he was drunk than sober. By the end of the night everyone was ready to leave, Harvey was incredibly drunk. He stumbled home alone and upon getting back to his apartment, he flung open the door and the shock knocked a picture frame off the wall causing it to break.Instead of cleaning up the mess, he staggered into his bedroom and passed out for the night. When he awoke the day, he was running late for work and very hungover. Upon seeing the shattered picture on the floor on his way out the door, he became irate that he did not have time to clean it up because he really hates having messes lay around.
On his way to work, Harvey was speeding to try and make up for lost time and ended up getting pulled over by a cop on the freeway for going over the speed limit. He had always sped as a way to let off steam and make up lost time when he was in these situations after nights of drinking, but he had never been caught before. The officer ultimately let him off with a warning as it was his first offense. Instead of feeling guilty about breaking the law and the fact he was aware his drinking was getting out of hand, Harvey justified his reckless driving that morning by convincing himself "I was just going with the flow of traffic and happened to be the one the cop picked out of the crowd to pull over. Everyone else was doing it too."
Answer both questions below:
Question #1: Identify two Freudian defense mechanisms shown by Harvey in this case study. First, define each defense mechanism. Then connect each defense mechanism to a clear example from the case study. When explaining each defense mechanism, discuss how the agencies of the mind are operating.
Question #2: Identify what stages of psychosexual development that Harvey is fixated in (there should be more than one). Give examples from the context of the case study that justify your selections.
