Abstract: This article analyzes the notion of 'respect' as it manifests itself within "Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave," and it's continued importance in black culture. The author describes how Douglass used the concept as a method of self-definition, necessary in a culture that would deny him the very notion of a 'self.'
