AnSc 318 Problem Set Il-Equine Ration Balancing Equine Ration Balancing 1. Horses are typically fed forages and grain concentrate mixes separately (unlike total mixed rations used in feeding finishing cattle or dairy cows). If horses are fed in confinement, they should be given a minimum of 1 kg of a forage per 100 kg body weight (1% BW). Estimated feed consumptions are given in table 5-4 (see attached) for various borse classes. A grain concentrate mix is provided if the forage is unable to supply all required nutrients. In formulating a grain concentrate mix for a horse, one must consider: (1) the total nutrient requirements of the horse and (2) the nutritional contributions of the forage. 2. A portion of the new NRC (1989) requirements for horses is attached to this problem set. In balancing horse rations, use the attached tables or the computer program "Equine" to determine nutrient requirements.
