Timestamp What is your age (in years)? What is your gender? What is your ethnicity? Is it easier to understand others' struggles rather than personal struggles? During hard times I am kind and understanding to myself. I consider myself the problem in times of difficulty. When I'm feeling anxious or stressed, I remind myself that it's temporary and will pass. I consider myself the problem in times of difficulty. I try to see my failings as part of the human condition. I can be hard on myself when I don't meet my own expectations. I am my own source of support and encouragement. I find it difficult to let go of negative thoughts about myself. I often feel like I'm not good enough. I am my own worst critic. I strive to be my best self, even when I think that I will never exceed I fight through my pain by meditating and saying affirmations When life throws me lemons, I tend to make lemonade without knowing I have purpose in life, so I look forward to creating a positive atmosphere I love myself amid all my trials and storms I am an over-thinker I am critical of myself when things don't go as planned. I try to be loving towards myself when I'm feeling emotional pain I'm good at recognizing my own strengths and accomplishments.

W6 Discussion Question 1: PSC: Reliability Analysis - Group 3

Purpose: Your statistical learning and training in SPSS will culminate in the analyses you conduct this week on the scale you developed for the PSC project. By showing your analyses and discussing your results, you will demonstrate your mastery of the statistical knowledge and skills required for this course.

Post: Use SPSS to compute Cronbach's Alpha for your scale. If there are any domains/subcategories within your scale, identify those and the questions that are associated with each. Analyze each subscale separately.

Open the data set in SPSS and click on "Analyze" in the menu. Then point your mouse at "Scale" and click on "Reliability Analysis". Click on each of the variables in the box on the left and move them over to the "Item" box on the right until you have selected all domain variables. Click on the "Statistics" button in the upper right. This will open the Statistics box. Then click on "Scale if item deleted" in the upper left and "Correlations" in the upper right. Click on "Continue" and this will take you back to the original box where you selected the variables. Finally click on "OK" and SPSS will carry out the calculations you requested. See the video and tutorials in Week 5's readings and resources if you need additional help completing these analyses.

Examine your items and the output. For each item in your scale, report the following in a table:

  • the value of Cronbach's Alpha,
  • the inter-item correlation matrix showing the correlations between each pair of variables, and
  • the value of Cronbach's Alpha if an item (i.e., variable) is deleted.

After reporting the above data, discuss your findings. Which items are strong? Which are weak and should be deleted? If there are items that should be deleted, run another analysis doing so. Does the reliability indeed improve? What is your recommended final set of items? After looking at the items, do you understand why they performed the way they did (that is, why certain items were identified as more or less highly internally consistent)?
