We have learned that legal professionals play a big part in shaping the law. Formal laws and regulations and other formalized rules set the framework for governance of given areas of activity. All important areas of activity have their own established legal frameworks. Think of, for instance, transportation, tourism, agriculture, state administration, family affairs, business organization, criminal activity, education, environment and so on. Real people and legal entities are in constant need to have advice in how to navigate these rules whether to make sure that what they plan to do is compliant with the rules or to defend themselves from charges that they have violated the rules. At times it is necessary to engage in negotiation to resolve problems with the law.

Both advising and negotiation skills are also primary skills of rule of law advisors.

In lesson 6 we have considered a five-step client-centered advising model through which the advisor and client work together to decide a courses of action in dealing with problems which come up. We have also looked at different styles of negotiation.In this assignment, you are asked to do threethings:

• provide a commentary on the advantages and disadvantages you see in using the 5-step advisory model;
• give an example the advantages you think there might be if you were to serve as an advisor to a Ministry of Justice on how to improve the efficiency of the country's legal aid system about which you know very little; and
• Comment what the 5-step client-centered advising model and principled negotiation have in common.
