Week $07$ Discussion $(7\mathrm{.}5)$

One of the main methods we used to solve two$-$dimensional kinematics problems is by converting it to two one$-$dimensional problems. This method of solving big problems by turning them into many small, solvable problems has many names, but in computer science we call it decomposition. We can use that method in any science and engineering field, but it's practical advice for just about anyone.

Let's say I want to lose some weight $-$ a task that's one sentence long, but isn't as simple as it sounds because it encompasses many different factors. I can break down that goal into two smaller, but separate goals: eating healthier, and being more active. But those two tasks may still be too broad and general, so it might be more helpful to break it down further:

Losing Weight

Eating Healthier

Measure portions for meals.

Limit snacks.

Eat more vegetables.

Being More Active

Take stairs instead of elevators.

Walk through shopping centers instead of driving.

Take $30-$minute breaks doing jumping jacks or pushups.

You can break those smaller bullet points even further, down to the point where each bullet point contains a specific, solvable action. The list I$\text{'}$m giving is not necessarily nutritional advice, but you get the idea, right?

This week's discussion prompt is to take your major$/$field as an example and use decomposition to solve a problem. It doesn't have to be as in$-$depth as the example I gave: just breaking down a task into a few smaller tasks is all you need to show!

For your reply, try to break the problem down differently. There may be some aspect of the problem that they didn't consider, or you might have a different perspective on the components involved. Remember to keep things respectful!
