While an international student was asking a question in one of their university classes, their professor and classmates began to laugh. The student felt that they were being subjected to public humiliation because they had said or done something that was enough that the professor would remove them from the class. Because the class was required for graduation, the student realized that they would not be able to finish their degree if they were asked to leave the class although the professor had not done this. After this experience in class, the student stopped attending classes and stayed in their dormitory room for 3 days, trying to summon the courage to tell their parents. They were devastated that they felt that they had let down their family who had contributed significantly for them to be able to be able to attend university. Their concerned roommate assisted them in going to the university Mental Health Centre to see a counsellor.
How might a counsellor inquire to find out what happened for students in class and about how they responded as they did, help reduce the student's distress, and help collaborate with them to be able to go back to class. Please consider contextual factors that may have been affecting the student such as how to navigate what may be unfamiliar classroom styles, homesickness, trying to acclimate to Canadian environments, and to also look for places of their strength in undertaking learning in a university in Canada.
