You are a special event planner, creating a special event for a client or your boss. You know the best way to get people to come to your event will be to use social media marketing techniques, which is why you are going to be presenting a social media plan using a slide deck to convince your client or boss how your event will work. All the assignments are elements of this social media plan that you will be developing by the end of the semester. Submit Activity 1 into the dropbox. Make sure you check due dates. Late submissions will not be accepted. Activity #1: Fictional Special Event Proposal Activity 1 is the first step towards your final assignment. You are a special event planner, creating a fictional special event for a client. You are an industry expert and know how to get people to come to your event using social media marketing techniques.

Step 1: Create a fictional event: The assignment's objective is to create a fictional event that is not a religious event, but it can be anything else. Ideas include but are not limited to:

  • Virtual events
  • Conferences
  • Charity events
  • Movie screening
  • Comedy shows
  • Movie premiers
  • Vendor shows
  • Orientation
  • Fashion show

Do not be afraid to be creative and think outside of the box! But remember, when it comes to events, it is all about the DETAILS. Remember, you are using social media to attract people to your event, to either sign up, buy tickets or attend. It needs to be an event that makes sense for this type of marketing campaign. If you are unsure of your idea, feel free to email me and run it by me!

Pick a date, time, location in the GTA and provide a brief description of the overall event.

Step 2: Goals and Objectives After you have selected an idea for your event, please give it a title and build goals and objectives for the event using S.M.A.R.T objectives.

  • S - SPECIFIC
  • M- MEASUREABLE
  • A- ATTAINABLE
  • R- RELEVANT
  • T - TIMELY Be sure to list these out one by one, and explain how it meets the criteria. It may be helpful to think of the below brainstorming questions when completing these goals:
  • Why are you hosting this event
  • What impact will this event have
  • Be as specific as possible for the details
  • How will you measure the success of the event
  • Is this event relevant in the current climate
  • What does your timeline look like (give yourself at least 6 months from planning to execution)

Step 3: Target Audience Provide a information and build a profile for your target audience

  • Think of demographic (age, race, gender, marital status, income, education, employment) characteristics - you will be honing in on these closer in part 2
  • Think of psychographic characteristics (values, desires, goals, interests, lifestyle choices) - again, diving into more detail on these in part 2.
  • This section is for you to describe what the ideal target audience for your event look like
  • **Attract people of a certain age to come to the event
  • **Build the persona of the target person who would attend your event. A woman, teenager, 20 something etc. What do they like, where are they from? What is their interests etc. Where do I find these people?

Step 4: Research Lastly, do some research! Compare your event with a similar event from the G.T.A. (Greater Toronto Area). Explain how your event is different and how you will be able to capture your target audience.
