One steady customer is in Tartu, Estonia and their typical order consists of three turbine engines (each weighing 10,000 lbs.) being shipped in one 40' container (empty container weight 8,267 lbs.). Currently it takes about 30 days for each shipment to go from Syracuse to Tartu. The customer has calculated that each shipment, using the current transport route being used, emits 1328 kg of CO2e (TTW). To meet corporate objectives (that are heavy influenced by national policy) the customer is requiring you to reduce the route emissions to under 1000 kg of CO2. They will allow shipping time to increase to 36 days.

The transport route you have been using is:

  • Container is loaded at the plant and trucked to the Port of Boston, Massachusetts. The distance is 320 miles
  • It takes 1 hour for the truck to drop the container in the port
  • Dwell time (time the container will sit at the terminal before being loaded onto a ship) in Boston is 2 days
  • A containership receives the container and transports it to the Port of Antwerp where it is loaded onto another ship that delivers it to the Port of Tallinn.
