Brainstorm a few debatable topics (e.g., veganism, self-driving vehicles). Then, select one and consider how you could map audience members’ preexisting attitudes (that is, their latitudes of acceptance, noncommitment, and rejection). Come up with some sample statements for each latitude and then ask a few classmates to rank your statements as acceptable, unacceptable, or undecided. Based on these findings, how wide is your audience’s latitude of noncommitment? What messages could you use to persuade them toward one side or the other?
