The Chernobyl disaster was a catastrophic nuclear accident that occurred on April 26, 1986, at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine, which was under the direct jurisdiction of the central authorities of the Soviet Union. An explosion and fire released large quantities of radioactive contamination into the atmosphere, which spread over much of Western USSR and Europe. It is widely considered to have been the worst nuclear power plant accident in history, and is one of only two classified as a level 7 event on the International Nuclear Event Scale (the other being the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011). Prepare a short report or PowerPoint presentation describing:

(a) The steps leading up to the reported disaster.

(b) A list of root cause(s) of the reported disaster.

(c) The ethical dilemma inherent in the reported disaster because a choice between at least two alternatives had to be made.

(d) An additional good alternative that could have either prevented the disaster or reduced the severity of its consequences.
