Incarceration rates across the globe have been increased about 25% between 2000 to 2020 according to the UN (UNODC, 2-3). It varies for each nation individually. The country that tends to get the most attention is the US. America is considered to have the most people incarcerated than any other in the world, with roughly 1.8 million prisoners as of 2023. The US is not alone, as both China and Russia each also have a large incarceration rate. As of 2023, China as between 1.5 to 1.6 million prisoners, while Russia has about 400 thousand prisoners, though exact figures are hard to come by since neither nation is very transparent with such statistics. In comparison, countries like Vietnam, Egypt, and Morocco have between them each roughly a little more than 300 thousand prisoners (about 100 thousand each) (Dyvik, Statista Data).
