The environmental context of communication is more than the location and the built environment. It is also our perception and feelings toward the environment. According to Albert, each environment has an information rate which is used to measure whether an environment is considered high load or low load. A high load environment has a higher level of uncertainty and can be described as complex, novel, moving, large-scale, or surprising among other things. A low load environment has a lower level of uncertainty and can be described as simple, familiar, still, small-scale. High load environments can illicit feelings of arousal or anxiety, displeasure, and lack of control; whereas low load environments are more familiar and illicit feelings of non-arousal or comfortable, pleasurable and more controllable. Due to these feelings, people are more apt to communicate in low load environments and may suffer from uncertainty avoidance in high load environments. Discuss?
