The focal point for my topic that I want to specialize in would be working with first-generation High School athletes of African Americans, and Mexican Americans from low-income families who are at a disadvantage in resources and access that uses athletics as a ticket to a better future. The rationale behind my reason and why this interests me is because I grew up in this category, and the number of adversity people goes through as a child in those stages of life is unreal. The things people think about, go through, and see are not just stressful but traumatizing, which could later affect the bio-psycho-social factors.

The first question I am trying to answer with this research would first be what is it like for disadvantaged, first-generation athletes of color from low-income families being raised in poverty areas with a lack of resources? The second question would be, what contributing factors to poverty among disadvantaged male and female youth of color? These questions would be interesting to know what comes up in terms of disadvantages that we would see in first-generation athletes of color from low-income families.

The performance population I am addressing would be first-generation athletes of color from low-income families. More so, adolescents attending a four-year university on a full-ride athletic scholarship and the impact it will have on not only the student-athlete and family but their overall well-being to prevail in life from where they came from within a low-income community. I chose this performance population, because I think a lot of people can relate and it also resonated with me during my upbringing from Sacramento, CA as an adolescent living in a lower socioeconomic status neighborhood. To not having efficient resources or access to gyms nearby, healthy nourishments, etc. can hinder your mental health, which can affect how you decide to move in life.

My purpose of choosing this area is to shine a light on those who experienced being a first-generation athlete of color from low-income families with a disadvantage in resources and access. I applaud those people because I got to manage and see the good in participating in athletics as a ticket to a better future and a way out towards better holistically. Therefore, to know people who have been through the same journey is a blessing because they're using what GOD gave them to get through trial and tribulation to see what is on the other side for their betterment of opportunities and new beginnings.

I would assess the issue by doing a SurveyMonkey on adolescent athletes to understand better the demographic population within a low-income neighborhood that is experiencing significant deficits within their community. I would provide treatment to that population by providing resources and setting up sessions based on their needs and what they're qualified for in terms of treatment planning. For example, psychotherapy, group therapy, and running sessions will help them from a holistic approach. Also, helping them understand and utilize sports and performance psychology tools to help them within their sport, such as focus, motivation, confidence, imagery, smart goals, etc. Depending on which facility suits them more towards treatment planning, I would even refer them to outpatient clinics, in-patient, and private practice. I would discuss with their parents what would be most suitable for their children if they are under 18 years of age.

The expected results from this research are to gain insight into what needs to be done and how I can help first-generation athletes of color from low-income families with a disadvantage in resources and access and help them capitalize on opportunities that will help them prevail. Also, to see overall quality results from individuals that chose to participate in the research. Lastly, to see what GOD has to offer to help make the results meaningful and authentic within the research.
