Part 1: Dynamic Modeling
A jacketed stirred tank is used to cool a process by causing cooling water to flow
trhough the jackes as shown in Figure 1. The process input variable is the flow of cooling water
fc(t), The inlet temperature of the process stream Ti(t) is considered as a disturbance variable.
The output of interest is the outlet temperature of the process and the water T(t),Tc(t),
Figure 1 Jacketed process
respectively. We assume a constant volume of the tank, both fluids densities and specific heat
coefficients are constant. Furthermore, both tank and jacket are assumed to be perfectly mixed
and heat losses are negligible
1- From the unsteady-state energy balance
a. derive the following differential equations that represent the dynamic response
of the process
dT(t)dt=fV[Ti(t)-T(t)]-UAVCv[T(t)-Tc(t)]
dTc(t)dt=fc(t)V[Tci(t)-Tc(t)]-UAVccCvc[T(t)-Tc(t)]
b. Show that the transfer function model relating T(s) to Ti(s) and Tc(s) can be
expressed as follows, and give the expression for 1,K1 and K2 as a function of
the process parameters
T(s)=K11s+1Ji(s)+K21s+1Tc(s)
where T(s),Ti(s), and Tc(s) are the deviation variables of T(s),Ti(s), and Tc(s)
respectively
c. Show that the transfer function model relating Tc(s) to Fc(s) and T(s) can be
expressed as follows, and give the expression for 2,K3 and K4 as a function of
the process parameters
Tc(s)=K32s+1Fc(s)+K42s+1T(s)
where Fc(s) is the deviation variable of fc(s)
d. Obtain the transfer function relating T(s) to Fc(s) and Ti(s)
2- Draw the block diagram of the process
1=1.36,2=2.54,K1=0.6,K2=0.35,K3=0.2, and K4=1.1
3- Provide the time-domine characteristics of the process, assuming Ti(s)=0
4- Analyze the degrees of freedom of the process.
