Select an article from it that sounds interesting to you. Read the abstract first to gain a general sense of the ideas and approaches. Then try the first-sentence strategy. Keep in mind that it does Reviewing and Evaluating a Research Article • 69 not always work, particularly if the article is not well written; however, we think that you will be impressed with how much you can gain with this small expenditure of time and effort. Now using the same article, go back to read the first paragraph of the Introduction and the first paragraph or two of the Discussion. Next turn to reading the hypotheses (typically presented at the end of the Introduction), and then scan the methods and results sections. Finally, stop to quiz yourself to see if you have a basic understanding of the research questions, the hypotheses and their importance, the methods, and the results. If not, go back to scanning various sections to determine these. This exercise should help you develop your skills in finding your way around a research article in psychology.
