4. An air-standard gas-turbine engine operates on an overall pressure ratio of 4 between temperature limits of 21C and 871C. It is assumed that the specific heat, Cp = 1.005 kJ/kg- K, remains constant and y = 1.4. (a) The efficiency of this cycle may be written as a function of re and y. How does this value compare to that of a Carnot cycle operating between the same upper and lower temperatures? (10%) (b) Briefly outline how irreversibilities affect a real cycle and how regeneration, intercooling and reheating may be used to improve the efficiency. [25%] (c) Calculate the efficiency of the cycle if the following modifications are made; The efficiencies of the compressor and turbine are 0.82 and 0.92 respectively, a regenerator of efficiency 0.65 is used, and a two stage compressor with intercooler is used. [65%] (To minimise the compressor work the pressure ratio across each stage must be the same. This requires the pressure ratio across each stage to be the square root of the overall pressure ratio.)
